Why trust anyone else

This Preliminary Asbestos Risk Assessment Checklist (PARAC), is designed to reduce your risk of exposure to asbestos and prevent the disturbance of asbestos.

The PARAC helps to highlight when Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) are likely to be present in an historic object in any collection.

The following object handling activities have been identified by senior collections professionals as tasks that could cause exposure to asbestos:

  • Loans In or Loans Out
  • Cleaning & Conservation
  • Acquisitions & Disposal
  • Objects In Operation
  • Handling & Auditing
  • Object Restoration
  • Inspections & Examinations
  • Object On Display
  • Object Packing & Unpacking
  • Dismantling & Reassembly
  • Transportation & Movements
  • Object Storage Management

Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires a suitable and sufficient assessment to be carried out in order to determine the likelihood of asbestos being present. This PARAC fulfils the requirement and is intended to be used at your desk, away from the object, to prevent accidental exposure to microscopic respirable asbestos fibres.

Once complete, this PARAC data will be captured as a PDF, making it easy for you to file and/or print for future reference
